Established in 1973, in 1992 it was included in the East Carpathian Biosphere Reserve. It is the third larg- est national park in Poland and the largest national park situated in the Polish mountains. Scenery and nature-wise, it encompasses the most interesting parts of the Bieszczady.The entire area of its characteristic meadows, called poloniny, is under strict environmental protection.
